Event description

Description

What if you could literally turn molehills into mountains? What if you could ask trees to tell their tall tales, without special effects? What if you could put your audience inside someone’s head, inside someone’s womb - all without the most ridiculous CGI budget?

Audio drama gives writers & producers the freedom to develop even the most ambitious ideas into fully-fleshed stories, on the most shoe-string of budgets. All you need are the voices, the sounds, and the silences. But, most importantly, you need to know how to use them.

In this “Audio Drama Writing 101” workshop, you’ll draft & develop your own audio drama script from scratch. You’ll learn about the potential of this intimate, boundless medium; the challenges to overcome, and the advantages to, well, take advantage of. (N.B. We’ll be using these scripts in the following workshop, “DIY Audio Drama”.)

Jay Sykes

Jay Sykes is an award-winning audio producer & writer, his most acclaimed drama “SeaBurn” scooping him a Gold at the New York World’s Best Radio Awards in 2015. As an academic tutor of audio drama & radio production at the University of Sunderland, Jay teaches regular workshops in audio drama writing, performing, directing & editing.

He’s currently producing two programmes for BBC Radio 4; “Drawing in the Dark”, and the “Charles Parker Prize 2018”, and produces / presents the weekly arts discussion programme ArtyParti on Sunderland-based community radio station Spark FM.

Jay is also 1/3 of the Community Radio Award 2017 gold award-winning “Mackem Craic” project; an audio drama created through writing, performance and editing workshops with various groups in Sunderland and South Tyneside.
