Event description

The SFL Audio Systems Masterclass

The SFL Audio Systems Masterclass is a four part training course in live sound system design, implementation and control.

Taught by Mark Payne, SFL Group's Technical Director, we share the accumulated lessons and wisdom accrued over more than 25 years delivering live sound reinforcement systems to venues and events across the UK and abroad.

Who is this course for?

Anyone involved in live sound re-enforcement, sound system engineering and music technology with an interest in the design and control of high-end PA systems.

The course is designed specifically with professional audio engineers and system designers in mind and delegates should expect to finish the course with theoretical knowledge and practical experience they will find invaluable working in any capacity the live audio industry, however amateur or semi-professional engineers, hobbyists, volunteer technicians or anyone else with an interest in live audio systems will also benefit significantly from this course.

Please note that this course is focussed primarily on system design and configuration, it does not cover mixing or operation of sound desks.

What is covered?

The course is spread over four days, each day focusing on a different topic in live audio.

Day 1: Acoustics for Live Sound Engineers (23rd Apr)

Understanding how sound behaves in different circumstances is critical to good sound system design. The objective of this session is to learn some practical acoustic theory that will help you to justify good habits, destroy bad ones and develop a better approach to choosing and using loudspeaker systems. This will be a hard hitting and technical session but you will also spend moments running around with your eyes closed holding an SPL meter!

Day 2: Line Array Theory & Design (24th Apr)

Line Array loudspeaker systems have become the solution of choice for many mid- to large-scale events. Focusing on line array systems from the world’s two most popular professional speaker systems manufacturers - L-Acoustics and d&b audiotechnik - this session will explore the theory behind modern line array solutions and how we design line array systems for live events. We will cover everything you need to know in order to understand the deployment of line array speaker systems, based around extensive case studies and examples from SFL's many years as a leading audio systems provider. Students will also be introduced to the d&b ArrayCalc and L-Acoustics SoundVision software tools.

Day 3: Line Array Rigging & Practice (25th Apr)

Following on from the Line Array Theory & Design session, this hands-on practical session will involve rigging and tuning of real line array systems from L-Acoustics and d&b audiotechnik. We will cover everything you need to know in order to deploy these systems for live events in a safe and efficient manner, including physical rigging, cabling and connection, and system configuration and tuning.

Day 4: Networking & Control Workshop (26th Apr)

In the modern era of digital audio and networked control systems audio engineers often need a solid foundation in computer networking. This session covers: 1) Computer networking fundamentals including the OSI 7 Layer Network Model and TCP/IP. 2) Network control solutions for d&b audiotechnik and L-Acoustics loudspeaker systems, including an introduction to L-Acoustics Network Manager and d&b R1 software tools. 3) Digital audio transport protocols used by the leading mixing console manufacturers including Dante, MADI, REAC, AES50 and more. The session will involve both theory and practical demonstrations, in particular exploring integration between different audio protocols.

Individual Day Tickets Available

The course is designed to run as a complete package over four days, with each day's content leading on from the last. Delegates will gain the most from attending the full course in this way. However, delegates with specific interests or who are unable to make the full course may optionally choose to attend any combination of individual days.

What are the timings for each day?

Each day runs from 9.30am to 5pm, with breaks for refreshments and lunch. Please aim to arrive promptly each day, due to the significant volume of content the course will begin at the times advertised even if some delegates are still to arrive.

Do I have to attend all four days?

No. The course is designed so that each day follows on logically from the last, and we believe delegates will get the most out of the course by attending all four days. However, delegates with specific interests or who are unable to make the full course may optionally choose to attend any combination of individual days. Simply book the tickets for the days you wish to attend.

Are there any prerequisites?

There are no specific prerequisites for this course, however we assume delegates come to the course with a basic background knowledge in live audio systems and live sound engineering. Complete beginners who have never assembled a sound system before may struggle with the level of the content and would benefit from attending one of our introductory courses first. If you can tell the difference between a XLR and a NL4 then you'll be just fine.

Is there a certificate or qualification for this course?

SFL training courses are not independently accredited and do not provide any formal qualification or certificate. Our focus is on passing on real-world skills and expertise based upon SFL's significant experience as a leading name in the UK live events industry. Courses are not assessed so there is no pass or fail, however we can provide a certificate of attendance if required (e.g. as evidence of CPD).

Is accomodation provided?

Accomodation is not provided. For delegates requiring overnight accomodation we recommend booking at the nearby Travelodge or Holiday Inn hotels at Winnersh Triangle. These are both approximately 5 minutes drive from SFL.

Is food provided?

Tea/coffee and light refreshments will be provided throughout the course, but meals are not provided. We are a short walk from local amenities should you require. A group meal is often organised for one night of the course, however the cost for this is not included in your booking.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

All courses are hosted at SFL’s facilities in Reading unless otherwise stated. Our address is: SFL Group, Unit 5, Headley Park 10, Woodley, Reading, RG5 4SW
