Description

‘Augustus John in Dorset’

Curator talk by David Boyd Haycock

In the first three decades of the twentieth century Augustus John (1878-1961) was widely considered one of the greatest and most important living British artists, famous almost as much for his extraordinary Bohemian lifestyle as for his outstanding portraits, etchings and drawings. Though he travelled widely in Britain, France and Italy over this period, between 1911 and 1927 he rented Alderney Manor, near Poole, and painted a number of significant works and personalities around Dorset during that period. Dr. Haycock’s lecture will explore the story of John’s life, from his birth in Wales through to his life and times at Alderney Manor.

The talk lasts approximately 60 minutes. Tickets are free but we will take donations on the door.
