Event description

Description

An energy revolution is under way with far-reaching consequences for nations, companies, and the way we address climate change.

Recent surges in technological innovation - from the internet of things, ‘big data’ and artificial intelligence, to advances in battery technologies, renewables and electric vehicles – will bring about a mass electrification of almost everything. Equally, the advent of shale oil and gas, on the back of innovations in hydraulic fracturing techniques, has reshaped fossil fuel markets - with the US fast becoming a net gas exporter and challenging OPEC supremacy.

These trends will inexorably reduce the demand for fossil fuels, and prove more effective than current efforts to avert climate change.

These are just some of the trends illuminated in Professor Dieter Helm’s book, Burn Out: the endgame for fossil fuels – which was recently released in paperback.

Aurora Energy Research will host an event on the 22nd May to discuss these themes and how they are shaping our energy and climate future. This will seek to address the following questions:

  • What should Governments and businesses do now to prepare for a radically different energy future?
  • How should oil companies and energy utilities adapt their business models?
  • How will these factors affect geopolitics and the economic outlook for oil-producing nations?

The event will commence with a keynote speech by Professor Dieter Helm. This will be followed by a presentation by Richard Howard (Head of Research, Aurora) of new analysis on the likely implications of the themes described in Burnout on global commodity prices, demand and supply. This will be followed by a panel debate, chaired by John Feddersen (CEO, Aurora) involving the following panellists:

  • Steven Fries, Chief Economist, Shell
  • Sonja Chirico Indrebø, Vice President Strategy & Innovation, Statoil
  • Richard Nourse, Managing Partner, Greencoat Capital
