About this event
For centuries, in the sky to the north, an ethereal light phenomenon called the Aurora Borealis has shimmered at irregular intervals. Over the ages people have watched its beauty in awe, and attributed its sudden and unpredictable appearance to all kinds of fantastical explanations.
Fire foxes, the flashing armour of female warriors, spirits of ancestors playing games, dragons fighting, lights from magical cities or the goddess of the dawn revealing a bridge between worlds were all said to be responsible. What could be the cause of the aurora, also known as the Northern Lights?
Ok, so we now know it’s solar winds, but tuck that under your hat for a minute and imagine yourself in the cool winter air, staring up at the dark sky long long ago, and seeing it begin to dance with colour… Let your imagination run wild!
FREE WORKSHOP - AURORA ARTWORK
Intra Arts is hosting a day to capture your creative responses on this theme, so come along to add a Northern Lights myth to our collection, make a digital drawing on an iPad, and use neon coloured stickers to build up a beautiful aurora artwork. If you prefer drawing on paper you can still take part. Drawings from the workshop will be digitally cut as stickers in glowing neon colours and added to large display panels, and pre-cut stickers can be arranged to make a display as part of the activities.
The artwork will be installed in the Intra Arts windows gallery during the Electric Medway festival 24-26 October 2025, and lit up to glow at night.
All ages and abilities are welcome, adults and children. Children attending must be supervised by an accompanying adult.

THE VENUE
The workshop takes place at Intra Arts, 337-341 High Street, Rochester, ME1 1DA. Our building is painted a fancy green with zigzags, and looks like it used to be a cinema, although it was actually part of a department store. We're bang in the middle of the Old High Street Intra area, between Star Hill and Sun Pier, the quirky in-betweeny bit where Rochester meets Chatham. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from Rochester Station.
We don't have any visitor parking spaces, but there's a car park 2 minutes walk down the road at Doust Way, next to the railway bridge.
We have a 3 inch step at the front of our building, and a ramp is available, and the rest of the workshop space is on one floor. Our toilet is not currently wheelchair-accessible.
