Parallel session 2: Workshop - Dimensions data science for curious librarians and research analysts

09:30 This workshop will introduce curious librarians and research analysts to the tools that researchers use on a daily basis to undertake data science, in the context of getting the most out of the Dimensions API.

The Dimensions API is a powerful way to analyse data from Dimensions. Using the API to its full potential means shifting from using spreadsheets to workflows involving data science toolkits such as Jupyter notebooks. Key in this transition is the move towards building data 'recipes’ that can be run for many different inputs. Write the recipe once, and then repeat it whenever you get a new request.

Workshop participants will learn:

- How easy it is to start using data science tools

- How to work with data in a Jupyter notebook, and manipulate data in pandas (spreadsheets for python)

- How to use the Dimensions API with Gigantum to answer common questions that librarians and research analysis get asked

- How to use the Altmetric API

- How to share your analysis with others, both publicly and privately

- How you can publish/share your results in figshare, and demonstrate the provenance of where your data came from

- How you can create reports in Overleaf from Gigantum that link analysis, figures and data, all the way back to the code that generated them.

What you will need:

- A laptop (we will use a our own gigantum server for the workshop)

- If you would like to run a local version of Gigantum (for running shareable notebooks), you can download and install it from
