Australia Day Gala 2018

Australians all let us rejoice...

Missing that Aussie barbie this year? Looking for that fix of green and gold? Join us on Tuesday 23rd January for our inaugural celebration of Australia Day in London. With 2018 marking the 250th anniversary of Cook's Endeavour voyage and the 100th year of Australia House, there's no better time to celebrate with your fellow expatriates and friends of Australia.

Hosted in the magnificent Palm Court of The Waldorf Hilton London, we're putting on the green and gold, and celebrating with bespoke Australian Starward whisky cocktails (with a Valrhona chocolate pairing), wine, beer from Negociants and Little Creatures, canapes, and some exciting entertainment including Matt Lee and an excerpt of Westwind; Djalu's Legacy.

For no matter how far or wide we roam, we still call Australia home...

Our Performers

Matt Lee, from Australia’s Swing on This & So You Think You Can Dance Australia

Matt Lee is a leading International dance personality and choreographer, and member of Australia's Swing on This group. In Swing On This some of Australia’s leading stage talents – Michael Falzon (We Will Rock You, Rock of Ages), Luke Kennedy (The Voice, The Ten Tenors), Matt Lee (So You Think You Can Dance, Mary Poppins), Rob Mills (Grease, Ghost) and Ben Mingay (Wonderland, An Officer and a Gentleman) deliver a modern, audacious take on some of the all-time swing classics, and rock and pop songs. Originally from Australia, he has starred in television and stage productions all over the world with roles in such shows as RENT, Miss Saigon, The Witches of Eastwick, Hugh Jackman's: The Boy From OZ, Singin' in the rain and We Will Rock You. Matt also performed the role of Bert in Mary Poppins the Musical in Australia, New Zealand and in the UK and International tour, earning him the 2011 Helpmann Award in Australia for Best Male Actor in a Musical. Matt was a permanent member of the judging panel, as well as choreographer, for So You Think You Can Dance Australia.

Westwind; Djalu's Legacy, directed by Ben Strunin and introduced by Bear with a traditional Yidaki (Didgeridoo) songline

Director Ben Strunin spent more than five years documenting Djalu’s journey, which ultimately manifests as one of his oldest Creation stories – the Wititj Songline that tells of two different serpents speaking together to maintain balance in the cycle of life. Djalu Gurruwiwi, an ageing Yolngu elder and master Yidaki (didgeridoo) player, is a custodian of his people’s ancient Songlines that have stored his clan’s Knowledge, Culture and Country since the birth of time. Supported by the MIFF Premiere Fund, the resulting film showcases this meeting of two worlds, where Western pop and Indigenous sacred songs become a common language used to transcend barriers.

Ebony Buckle, singer/songwriter

Ebony Buckle is a singer/songwriter of dramatic and whimsical folk pop. In 2014, she reached number 1 in the iTunes music charts for her folk versions of Silver Dagger and Matty Groves, which were released as part of the BBC1 Drama Inspector George Gently. Since then, she has been performing her own music, joining forces with her Husband Nick Burns (Ocasan, Kit Walker). Her songs are inspired by the stories she grew up with, the creatures she would love to meet, and the ridiculous situations she manages to get in to!
