Australian and British Cultural Fields: Trajectories of Taste and Policy

It is now almost a quarter of a century since the release of the pivotal Australian national cultural policy Creative Nation (Commonwealth of Australia, 1994; Rowe et al, 2016), which was followed by the creative industries policy initiatives behind the image of Cool Britannia fostered by the UK’s Blair government.  This is also a time when Australia is negotiating its orientation towards Asia and the United Kingdom is reconsidering its cultural identity in a post-Brexit world.  It is timely, therefore, to address the changing cultural environments of both countries.

An excellent opportunity to discuss these issues is presented by the research conducted for the Australian Cultural Fields: National and Transnational Dynamics led by Professor Tony Bennett of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), Western Sydney University. Its research methods include a major national survey of cultural participation, taste and knowledge; household and cultural sector interviews, and policy analysis.  The principal focus is on the art, literary, media, sport, music and heritage fields, combined with analysis of Indigenous, multicultural and digital ‘trans-fields’.  At this event, the research from selected Australian cultural fields will be presented and discussed, followed by a response from a discussant who reflects on its implications, similarities and differences with regard to the equivalent cultural fields in Britain.

Speakers Include

  • Professor David Rowe - Western Sydney University
  • Dr Ian Henderson - Menzies Centre for Australian Studies, King's College London
  • Professor Tony Bennett - Western Sydney University
