AUSTRALIANAMA: BENGALI SUFI POETRY IN THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

By Dr. Samia Khatun

Saturday 21 Oct. 2017, 2.30-4.30pm, Lab 1, Idea Store Whitechapel, 321 Whitechapel Rd, E1 1BU

Australian deserts remain dotted with the ruins of old mosques. Beginning with the discovery of a Bangla puthi that has remained in the desert mining town of Broken Hill for over a century, in this paper Samia Khatun tells a history of Bengali migration to the deepest reaches of the Australian interior in the 19th century.

Samia Khatun is a writer, filmmaker and historian. She was born in Dhaka, completed a PhD in history at the University of Sydney and is soon to develop a history program at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.
