Event description

Description

Innovation is at the heart of Alloa.

The land developed holistically from the 14th Century, to cultivate industry and make the most of natural resources, maximizing distribution. Coal, ale, whisky, glass and textiles shipped from the harbour to exotic locations throughout the world. Among its many successful industries, Alloa was the home of John Paton Son & Co later to become a FT 30 Index and global textile business. Employment was flourishing and coaches full of people would flock to Alloa everyday working in the knitting yarn industry. From its vibrant nightlife to its bustling high street, Alloa was an energetic and contemporary place to live and work.

Like so many towns across the UK, from the high spend of the 1980's, the fragmentation of communities began. The national conversation turned from a 'connected society' to 'individual is king'. Engaged communities were in decline. An 'us and them' culture was born. The Harbour, once a proud ship building port connected by trade to all continents has become silt filled, a dormant reminder of what used to be. Alloa became a grey town on a grey river, our vibrant multi-coloured enthusiasm washed away by the struggle. The people of Alloa were battle-weary. It was from this need that Resonate was founded by community in 2010. We know from our work with local people that Alloa could flourish once more. The people have the passion, the knowledge, the ability, the ideas and the answers.

The purpose of this Summit is to bring the community and the decision makers together to collaborate and to take the authentic action that Alloa and so many other towns so desperately need. Now is the time to innovate again in the face of adversity; to find an alternative path not only for Alloa but across Scotland.

After extensive research, Resonate were excited to connect with Jeremy Scrivens, one of the world’s leading experts on social innovations. Scrivens is an authentic voice who, through the process of Appreciative Inquiry, facilitates discussion and action within communities to bring about progressive change. He has worked successfully with communities across the world and is ranked Number 1 on the list of the #FurtureOfWork influencers via @rightrelevance and @AtosNL . After hearing Alloas story, Scrivens immediately recognised the potential and the passion of the people of Alloa and agreed to travel from Australia to Scotland for this collaborative opportunity.

As stakeholders in society we need our institutions to be participatory and mirror our values. Through common goals and interconnectedness we can realize our potential. Are you ready for the change that is coming? We are inviting you, as someone who cares deeply about the future of Scotland, to join us in Summit. Together we will take authentic action to visualize and co-create a future that will inspire your community to thrive again. This is progressive disruption to bring tangible change and build momentum nationwide.

This is just the beginning.
