Description

Hugh Fraser is best known as the actor who played Captain Hastings alongside David Suchet’s Poirot in the long running and much loved television series - but is also a highly-popular writer, and we're thrilled to welcome High's visit to discuss his book with us !

Rina Walker, the beautiful and ruthless contract killer created by Hugh , returned for more page-turning, action-packed adventures in his second crime thriller Threat, the sequel to Harm, which was published to considerable critical acclaim in 2015.

Rina was first introduced in Hugh’s debut novel, Harm, where she forms her young character against the backdrop of Notting Hill’s slum landlords and social deprivation. But Rina is a girl who will not be deterred, and her circumstances mould her into a clinical assassin. In parallel stories of the early 1960s and 1970s Rina shows her mettle and her heart as she battles murderous hoodlams and drug barons.

Threat – Hugh’s second novel - evokes the social duality of London in the swinging sixties, melding the respectable veneer of the Establishment with Soho vice in a twisting and turning story of macabre sexual desire, treachery and murder.

Rina is hired to find girls who have gone missing from Soho clubs and her efforts to save the innocent from slaughter become increasingly perilous as she grapples with interwoven layers of corruption and betrayal. In a story reminiscent of infamous 1960s scandals she makes her way, via the louche nightclubs of Berlin, towards a final confrontation with depravity.

Hugh Fraser says: “I have been very gratified by the reaction to Harm and Threat is the response to readers who asked for more of Rina Walker. She is an unusual assassin, who breaks the mould of the conventional female heroine. She is a cold killer with a warm heart.’

‘In Harm I used Roger Mayne’s photographs as visual inspiration for the tenements of Notting Hill in the 1950s where Rina grew up. Soho in the 1960s is well documented for its criminal characters and dubious clubs and it gave a sense of realism and excitement to portray Rina amongst the characters and vice of that time.”

Matthew Smith, publishing director of Urbane Publications, says “Hugh's books present a genuinely original character in Rina Walker - she's fearless, driven, deadly, but loyal to the last. Threat tells the story of her rise within the criminal underworld and is a truly gripping page turner - Hugh doesn't hold back and there are shocks galore! Rina is building a large group of loyal fans who praise her strong, fearless approach to life - as well as Hugh's compelling descriptions of a seedy, gritty, and very dangerous London. It might shock Poirot fans! Hugh's books offer a highly original and compelling choice in the competitive thriller genre.”
