Event description
Join us for a conversation between two analysts, both professional musicians, exploring the central role of musicality in human relationship

About this event

Francis Grier will draw on his longstanding interest in this fascinating intersection; his writings include papers on musicality in the consulting room, on two Verdi operas (Rigoletto and La Traviata), on a gendered approach to Beethoven, and on the music of the drives and perversions. He will be in conversation with Anthea Gomez, who is also interested in the relation of musical form and feeling.

Together they will consider the significance of musicality in the therapeutic setting, its basis in early infant-mother interactions, the primal nature of music and its capacity to convey the range and extremes of human emotional life.

Francis Grier is a training and supervising analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. Before training as an analyst, he was a professional musician. He gave the first ever solo recital at a Royal Albert Hall Proms concert in 1985, and in 2012 was awarded a British Composer Award. He has recently written numerous papers on aspects of music and psychoanalysis and is Editor in Chief Elect of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.

Anthea Gomez is a training and supervising analyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. Her musical career began at the Royal Academy of Music where she won the Beckett Piano Scholarship. She went on to write music for theatre and became in-house composer for BBC Radio Drama.

The event will be chaired by psychoanalyst Anne Amos.

Everyone who registers will receive a link to a recording of the event a few days afterwards, which will be available to view for one month.
