Overview
After completing the 2 modules in this training, you will be able to understand the following:
• The exclusion process
• How a pupil’s autism might affect their behaviour
• The impact of exclusion on autistic pupils and their families
• Ways to meet and accommodate a pupil’s needs, to avoid exclusion.
Learning objectives:
After completing module 1, you will be able to:
• understand a headteacher’s power to suspend or permanently exclude an autistic pupil and other elements of the exclusion process as set out in statutory guidance
• explain the relevance of equality legislation on exclusion
• distinguish between lawful and unlawful exclusions and alternatives to exclusion
• recognise the impact of exclusion on families, seeing the exclusion experience through the eyes of the autistic pupil.
After completing module 2, you will be able to:
• identify distressed behaviour of autistic pupils and its triggers
• reflect on one's own role in the exclusion process
• understand the duty to make reasonable adjustments, as a way of avoiding incidents that could otherwise lead to exclusion
• identify ways to ensure a successful reintegration/transition back to school to avoid future exclusions
• consider the role the whole school has in encouraging inclusion
