AUTISM AND INCLUSION - Open Spring 2026

After completing the 2 modules in this training, you will be able to understand the following:

• The exclusion process

• How a pupil’s autism might affect their behaviour

• The impact of exclusion on autistic pupils and their families

• Ways to meet and accommodate a pupil’s needs, to avoid exclusion.

Learning objectives:

After completing module 1, you will be able to:

• understand a headteacher’s power to suspend or permanently exclude an autistic pupil and other elements of the exclusion process as set out in statutory guidance

• explain the relevance of equality legislation on exclusion

• distinguish between lawful and unlawful exclusions and alternatives to exclusion

• recognise the impact of exclusion on families, seeing the exclusion experience through the eyes of the autistic pupil.

After completing module 2, you will be able to:

• identify distressed behaviour of autistic pupils and its triggers

• reflect on one's own role in the exclusion process

• understand the duty to make reasonable adjustments, as a way of avoiding incidents that could otherwise lead to exclusion
