Overview

Autism and the sensory environment: understanding and managing the challenges

The sensory challenges of autism are often not recognised or are overlooked by the neurotypical world. It can be a very confusing place when you are struggling to understand yourself and your difficulties or if you are supporting someone with sensory issues.

We provide a safe, open space in which to explore, discuss and gain more knowledge about the eight senses. We will discuss how sensory challenges can affect the behaviour of autistic people and why, what strategies can be used to reduce the sensory environments affect on autistic people and what adjustments can be made to the environment to help with these difficulties.

Living with autism herself, our peer trainer will give lived experiences and discuss the barriers she has come up against, along with the strategies she has used to help herself overcome sensory challenges and the adjustments that can be asked for when out and about.

We aim to inspire hope by showing people that they are not alone and openly welcome service users, carers and staff to come along and learn more about the senses through the sharing of knowledge and experiences.
