Description

The Autism Awareness Programme enables all primary professional to successfully understand and support children with autism. The programme explores autism in theory, policy and practice and offers participants the experience to visit and learn from a specialist ASD unit (The Harbour)

Course Information

This programme is aimed at any education professional who works or is looking to work with students with Autism in the primary phase.
The programme consists of 4x sessions:

  • Background of Autism: 13th March 2018 9.00-3.30pm
  • Behaviour Management: 27th March 2018 9.30-3.30pm
  • Understanding in Practice: 17th April 2018 9.30-3.30pm
  • Visit the Harbour: Date and time to be arranged individually by each participant

Programme Aims

  • Participants will understand what Autism looks like, how it is diagnosed, the background of ASD and general strategies for setting up an ASD friendly classroom. Participants will gain understanding of how to differentiate and assess learning for pupils with practical learning ideas to use in their own schools.
  • Participants will understand sensory impairments and how to use strategies to provide children with sensory input.
  • Participants will be able to make their own Communication Boards and visual resourses that they can use in school.
  • Participants will learn a range of strategies to support children’s behaviour within the classroom.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to see what they have learnt over the past two sessions in practice to consolidate their learning and understanding of ASD and specialist approaches.
