Training overview

Food and eating can be a source of anxiety and distress for autistic people as well as for those who look after and support them. Sensitivities to do with taste, texture, colour, smell and temperature can make mealtimes difficult. A regulation-informed approach to supporting autistic people to explore food can make a positive difference by promoting strategies for self- and co-regulation around food. This one-day training for parents and professionals will provide theoretical background to the occupation of eating in the context of sensory processing and emotional regulation. Building on this foundation, delegates will explore a range of sensory processing difficulties and sensory patterns associated with autism and food. The training will provide practical advice and guidance on:

  • co-regulation for food exploration
  • presentation of foods
  • environmental enrichment
  • sensory/oral motor issues.
