Event description

Description

Be inspired and learn from people who really live with the condition

Learn about some of the most important parts of being an adult on the autistic spectrum

This event will look at some of the matters that affect autistic adults, including your rights based on the Autism Act and tips on how to cope with parenting and work. We use a holistic approach - any strategy implemented is likely to have a significant and beneficial impact on the individual's life as a whole.

With three different streams to choose from, attendees can select the material that is most relevant to them. We offer excellent value All Day tickets for those who want to stay for the full day.

This event is a great opportunity to:

  • learn insight and strategies from people who really live with the condition
  • meet and chat with other people
  • find out what information and support is available locally
  • see and purchase the amazing range of the girl with the curly hair books

This event is suitable for:

  • Autistic adults
  • Parents and carers
  • Anyone working with autistic adults or autistic children

Registration is at 9.15am

9.30am Introduction to Curly Hair Project and Trainer

9.45-11.00 am Talk 1: The Autism Act: what is it and what does it mean for you in education and work

The Autism Act 2009 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Act makes provision about the needs of autistic adults. Find out what it means and what your rights and opportunities are.

11.00 - 11.15 am Break

11.15-12.30pm Talk 2: Being an Autistic Parent

We will look at how to cope if you have children and you are on the autistic spectrum yourself. This situation is largely neglected in literature and other training courses so we hope you will find it extra helpful!

12.30-1.00pm Lunch (This is not provided, please bring your own)

1.00 pm - 2.00pm Workshop: Managing at Work (includes video) PART 1

2.00 -2.15 pm Break

2.15-3.15 pm Workshop: Managing at Work (includes video) PART 2

Working is vital for independence. A lot of people enjoy working because they feel it gives them purpose and value. However, lots of autistic adults struggle finding a suitable job and then maintaining their job.

This workshop looks at why working can be difficult and the sorts of things you as an autistic adult can do yourself to make it more manageable, as well as realistic and reasonable ideas on what employers and colleagues can do to support you.

You will also watch a short animated film written and directed by Alis Rowe about A Day at Work for The Girl With The Curly Hair.
