Event description

Description

Learn how autism affects people on a day to day basis

Learn from people who really live with the condition

This event will give you insight on how autistic people might experience everyday life and strategies to make normal days easier. We use a holistic approach - any strategy implemented is likely to have a significant and beneficial impact on the individual's life as a whole.

This event is a great opportunity to:

  • learn insight and strategies from people who really live with the condition
  • meet and chat with other people
  • find out what information and support is available locally
  • see and purchase the amazing range of the girl with the curly hair books

This event is suitable for:

  • Autistic adults
  • Parents and carers
  • Anyone working with autistic adults or autistic children

MORNING SESSION

9:00 REGISTRATION

9:15AM INTRODUCTION TO CHP/TRAINER

9:30 AM Talk 1: Understanding and managing social anxiety

Social anxiety is anxiety about social situations. The social anxiety that autistic people experience might be different from 'normal' ('neurotypical') social anxiety. Providing an autistic person with strategies for neurotypical social anxiety may make things worse. Learn how it is different and discover more appropriate strategies to help.

10:40AM BREAK

10:55 AM Talk 2: Understanding and managing strong and atypical emotions

Autistic people can have quite 'strange' emotional reactions - they may have very big emotions, may appear to have no emotions at all, or may display them in unusual or challenging ways. Learn about how autistic people might experience emotions and gain ideas on how to more successfully manage them. We also discuss the interesting question that is, "Do autistic people lack empathy?"

12:05-12:35PM Lunch (Lunch is not provided)

AFTERNOON SESSION

12:35PM Video: A Day At College For The Girl With The Curly Hair

Your chance to watch a short film written and directed by Alis Rowe, autistic woman and founder of The Curly Hair Project, with time for discussion and review of the film afterwards.

1:00PM Talk 3: What is sensory processing and how does it affect autistic people?

Sensory processing is the ability to perceive and understand the sensations that we are exposed to, such as light, touch, temperature, sound and smell. Most - if not all - people on the autistic spectrum have difficulties with their senses. Discover how this might look and understand how such difficulties can have a profound effect on an individual's experience and enjoyment of life. The good thing is, there are some very easy, simple things you can do that will have a tremendous positive impact.

2:10PM BREAK

2:20PM Talk 4: How to be a more effective communicator

Lots of people think they're good at communicating when really they're not! Being a good communicator is a valuable skill that all people can work on and improve throughout their life. Learn about body language and tone of voice. Learn how to improve and adapt communication to get the best out of the important people in your lives. This talk will cover adaptations people can make to the way they communicate, to better connect with the autistic person they know. It'll also give autistic people some ideas on the things they can do when communicating with other people too.
