Event Details

If you want or need to know more about working with children and young people who have Autism or PDA in an education or other setting, here is an essential full day workshop. This combined training day means attendees will be able to understand the difference between the behaviour challenges and gain credible strategies to help support the child/pupil/student.

Trainer

The trainer for these two programmes is Laura Kerbey, an autism champion, who has worked extensively with children and young people with high functioning autism, Asperger’s syndrome and PDA, in both mainstream and SEN learning environments.  Laura also works with families and siblings, and regularly runs social skills workshops in her local area.

Morning session: Six Simple Steps when Working with Learners with Autism

(9.30am - 12.00pm)

Whether in a teaching or supporting role, people attending this workshop will be able to leave the training with knowledge in the following areas:

Six Simple Steps:

Step 1        Understand what it means to have autism

Step 2        Communicate effectively with students who have autism

Step 3        Overcome sensory difficulties

Step 4        Remove barriers to learning

Step 5        Create an autism friendly environment

Step 6        Use positive behaviour management

Afternoon session - Understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance (1.00pm - 3.30pm)

After lunch, we will pull back the curtain on this condition.  In particular, you will:

  • Gain a greater understanding of the meaning of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA).
  • Know more about the impact PDA has on a child, teenager or young adult and how they might be supported.
  • Get to know the key principles of positive behaviour management when working with children, teenagers and young adults with PDA.
  • Recognise the effects that PDA has on learning and understand how to reduce the impact of this.
