Event description
An autistic led event celebrating autism acceptance and a sense of community

About this Event

AN EVENT FOR AUTISTIC PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES

This is an informal, non-academic conference celebrating autistic identity, and the sense of community & belonging between autistics. People can come and go as they please and sit where they want to during the event. It’s a celebratory event for us to enjoy the company of other autistics and make connections.

* Booked speakers and performers have been timetabled throughout the day (schedule to follow). Speakers’ talks will be related to our conference theme. Some of our speakers will include Agony Autie, The Autistic Advocate and Dr Damian Milton.

* There will be an opportunity for over 18s to take part in an improv comedy workshop which will take place in an adjacent building between 10:30-12:30. Please book a ticket for the pride event and email to book your place autisticpridekent@gmail.com. (Spaces are limited to 16 places as this is a small workshop). For more information about comedy improv please visit Nathan Improv on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nathanimprov/

* This is a family-friendly event.

*Thanks to funding from the Lions Club we will now be providing food free of charge at this event. There will be gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options available, however you are welcome to bring your own food and drink, although please note that due to university policy this must not be consumed within the conference building. There are plenty of great picnic spots on campus if you would prefer and other indoor spaces if the weather is not ideal. If you need help getting around campus, there will be some buddies to assist you.

*Please note: There is strictly no active selling or promoting of businesses or services at this event. However autistic people who wish to promote their own businesses/organisations are welcome to bring flyers to place on a designated table. **Only flyers promoting autistic led businesses or organisations will be allowed** As this is a pride event it is about putting autistic people first!

* For everyone’s comfort and convenience there will be a sticker system for communication as follows:

green stickers meaning ‘approachable and will talk to anyone’,

yellow meaning ‘I want to talk but I have trouble initiating’,

red meaning ‘I am only comfortable talking to people I know’.

* There will also be stickers for those who give consent to be in photos, and stickers to indicate if a person likes hugs. No stickers mean no consent to either.

*We will provide ear plugs to those attending. However, if you prefer your own ear defenders, please do bring them with you. If you think you will need sunglasses or stim toys, bring them if you think you’ll need them.

* Please respect the venue and the University campus. Do not leave any rubbish behind

* The grounds of the University have plenty of open space and secluded corners if you need a break from the crowd. You can leave and enter the main venue as and when you require throughout the event. There will also be a quiet room available within the venue building. This will be accessible by lift and by stairs.

*Please also note: If you require more details and photographs of the campus, venue , parking and facilities please email autisticpridekent@gmail.com and we will send you an information pack.
