Description

The Old Queens Head | September 28th 2016

A monthly evening of the finest folk music live at the Old Queens Head in Islington

TEYR

Folk trio TEYR (‘3’ in the Cornish language) evolved out of the London session scene, combining their multiple instruments and voices in every innovative way they can muster. Heavily influenced by the great Irish, Scottish, English and Cornish musicians who've come before, they’ve honed their craft and thrived on weaving diverse threads together.

Described by Folk Radio UK as “high-energy brilliance”, James Gavin (guitar, fiddle), Dominic Henderson (uilleann pipes, whistles) and Tommie Black-Roff (accordion) are three of London’s finest new breed of folk musician. After touring the UK & Ireland in 2015 and 2016 including appearances at Cambridge, Cecil Sharp House and numerous festivals, they look set to establish their name and their unique musical mix on the world in the year to come.

Featuring ten tracks of blistering originals and reworked ballads, Far From The Tree is a distillation of two years of playing, writing and wrangling. This highly anticipated debut album was recorded with the assistance of acclaimed producer Gerry Diver (Lisa Knapp, Sam Lee, Tom Robinson) and displays the full breadth of the trio’s innovative and distinctive sound.

"High-energy brilliance.” Folk Radio UK

"The future of folk music is safe in the hands of young musicians like this.” Na-mara

"These chaps play like ancient souls in young, charismatic bodies. TEYR take something old and keep it compellingly new. Not to be missed.” Outline Magazine

With Support from  LoÏc Bléjean and Tad Sargent

Two musicians from either side of the Channel united by a love of Irish music: LoÏc Bléjean on uilleann pipes and whistles and Tad Sargent on bouzouki-guitar, bodhrán and vocals. Loïc Bléjean is a Breton uilleann pipes and low whistle player.

Deeply rooted in Irish traditional music with incredible versatility, his journey has encompassed innumerable different projects over the last twenty five years. He began learning the pipes in 1989 under the tuition of Alain Le Hegarat. Loïc is a former member of influential bands including pop-rock group Glaz and French Canadian Gwazigan. He joined fest-noz leading group Carré Manchot in 2007, bringing the Irish pipes to the fine art of Breton dance music. More recently he featured in the orchestral ensemble Ars’Ys and progressive rock band Children in Paradise. and is now working with jazz musicians Gildas and JB Boclé, in the exciting Boclé Bros Band spanning between NYC & Brittany. In the village of Tréméven on the north coast of Brittany, Loïc and his brother Ronan have also founded Irish Rendez Vous Music Festival, promoting Irish traditional music at its very best since 2009.

London-born Tad Sargent, whose family roots trace to Castlebarr in county Mayo, started playing music at a young age on the piano. He took to the bodhrán in 2002 followed by the bouzouki in 2008 after re-discovering his love for Irish music from sessions run by legendary London banjo player Mick O’Connor. In the last few years Tad has played and worked with many great musicians in the traditional music scene including Barrule, Luke Daniels, Orlaith McAuliffe, Cara Dillon, and The Long Notes (to name a few). He has also branched out into other genres. He is a member of the band Ranagri, who released an album with pop legend Tony Christie (Amarillo fame) in 2015. He is also a member of Irish Traditional band CrossHarbour who released their critically acclaimed album in 2014. Through these works and many others he has played all over Europe and at some of the great venues around the UK, some of those include The Royal Albert Hall, The National Theatre, Glastonbury Festival and Cambridge Folk Festival.
