About this event

    P LEASE NOTE THAT THE DURATION OF THIS EVENT SHOWN ABOVE IS ONLY APPROXIMATE AND CANNOT BE GUARANTEED; IT WILL DEPEND ON FACTORS SUCH AS THE WEATHER AND THE WALKING PACE OF THE GROUP.

    Join this leisurely ramble with a Birmingham Ramblers group leader and enjoy social walking with our friendly members.

    It is very helpful for the walk leader to have prior knowledge of numbers that will be on this walk. We ask you to complete this very brief form to help with our planning of the walk to ensure that we can safely accommodate all who wish to join us. You will receive an automatic acknowledgement when you submit this form, and also a reminder of the details 2 days before the walk.

    Walk leader: Brenda Cameron

    This is a circular walk from Barnt Green train station - 4.75 miles walk with a tea/snack break (bring your own snacks – see below). Please note there are one or two very gradual easy ascents which we will take steadily so all can enjoy the walk.

    Meeting arrangements:

    By train: Meet at Barnt Green station at 10.45 am. The 10.15 am train from Birmingham New Street arrives at Barnt Green at 10.42 am, stopping all stations on the way. The train from New Street to Barnt Green usually goes from Platform 12 but check first. Please also make sure you catch the correct train, the 10.15. The return fare from New Street is £6.00. West Midlands travel pass holders need to buy a ticket from Longbridge to Barnt Green.

    If driving : meet at Barnt Green Station at 10.45 am. Parking charge at the station carpark is £2.50 on Saturdays. There is also roadside parking close to the station. Hewell Road alongside the railway line is a good option – but look out for any parking restrictions for a short section by the shops

    Walk Description:

    From Barnt Green station we walk north along an avenue of beech trees which should be looking good at this time of year. In part our walk will follow the “Woodpecker Trail” as it heads across Fiery Hill Road, through Cherry Hill Coppice, Pinfields Wood, and Lickey Warren before arriving at the visitor centre for a toilet stop. At time of writing the cafe is closed although the toilets remain - so you will need to bring your own snacks and drinks for when we have a break. After our break we detour a short distance to a spot on Bilberry Hill to enjoy some lovely views. Next we follow a heathland and wooded route along Cofton Hill, then turn off to follow a track lined with Douglas firs which stand very impressively above us. These large straight trees were first introduced to Britain in 1827 and are named after the Scottish botanist, David Douglas, who brought seed back from North America. Back on the main track briefly we return to Lickey Warren, a different part from earlier in the walk this time following a small stream before picking up our return route to the station - including the pleasing avenue of beech trees which started our walk. For those who would like to end the walk with refreshments before the journey home there is a very good cafe by the train station. There are three trains an hour back towards Birmingham. Walk distance: 4.75 miles. No stiles. Snack break (bring your own) and toilets at Visitor Centre.

    Expressions of Interest for this walk will close at 06.00 on Thursday 30 October. After this, please email bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com to enquire about any late availability for the walk.

    ====================================================

    If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know by sending an email to bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you. Please note that some walks have a waiting list so tickets are NOT TRANSFERABLE; if you are unable to join us then please cancel your place to free it up for someone who may be on the waiting list rather than passing it to someone else.
