Event description

Description

Arts Active, the education and community department of St David’s Hall, Cardiff, are pleased to offer this two day Javanese gamelan course. Working with highly trained gamelan tutors our regular gamelan courses offer those who have never played before, those with experience and those wishing to expand further into more complex instruments, the opportunity to develop and nurture their interest.

This October we are inviting you to come and spend two days in the heart of the city expanding your repertoire and knowledge of pelog music along with the chance to learn new techniques on instruments such as bonangs, sarons and drums.

This course with cover:
* How to expand playing techniques for larger style pieces without the need for soft instruments
* Taking simpler pieces and expanding their textures through playing styles such as demung imbal, saron imbal, Jogya drumming and much more
* A small sectional look at soft instruments if interested
* All of this will be done through pelog repertoire but it will also cover slendro pieces converted to pelog and looking at how to make them work for both tunings.

Tutor: Simon Steptoe

Following his postgraduate work in composition at Durham University during the late 80s, Simon spent three years studying gamelan in the city of Surakarta, Central Java at STSI (now called ISI - Institute Seni Indonesia). Whilst he was there he branched out from the mainstream Solonese style to include the study of a number of regional gamelan genres including West and East Javanese as well as the Banyumas styles in Central Java - and the fruits of his study from this time and later form the basis of the upcoming gamelan course at St David's Hall.

On returning to the UK in 1994 he took up the post of Gamelan and Creative Projects Officer at the Halle Orchestra which he held until 2005. It was during this time that he first made the acquaintance of the St David's Hall Gamelan Group. In 2005 he moved to the East Midlands to take on the role of Executive Director at The Firebird Trust, a music charity delivering creative music projects to disadvantaged groups across the region.

Currently he is working as a freelance arts education project manager including at the Northamptonshire Music Education Hub as Musical Inclusion Partnership and Projects Manager and teaching Gamelan Degung at the University of Manchester.
