Silence for Beginners
Richard Carter and Nicolas Stebbing CR
Thursday 20 – Sunday 23 October 2016
We are called home from the noise that is around us to the joys that are silent. St Augustine
Silence can be something we long for or dread, but it’s in silence, over the centuries, that men and women have sought and found God. As many who have tried it know, silence is not always as simple as it sounds, and this retreat will provide a ‘beginner’s guide’, with reflections on its nature, joys, pitfalls and uses by two people for whom it plays an essential part in their very different lives. It will also include a significant period when we will keep silence.
The retreat is residential and will be at the Community of the Resurrection in West Yorkshire, an Anglican monastery where silence is a daily part of the life of prayer. We will join the community for the retreat, including worship and meals, and they will keep silence with us. It will be led by Nicolas Stebbing CR, a monk in the Community, and the Revd Richard Carter, Associate Priest at St Martin’s in the Fields, London.
Cost £230, some bursaries available. The weekend runs from early afternoon on Thursday 20 to early afternoon on Sunday 23 October 2016 and the price includes full board and lodging. Accommodation is in single rooms, which are not en suite. Bursaries are available for those for whom the charge would make it difficult to attend: please contact us for details.
