Almost Forgotten

A Talk
By

Chris Davies
Guided Walk by Reiver Guiding

2nd June – 3rd June 2018

The RAF celebrates 100 years this year, and all around the country celebrations and memorials are taking place. Our Local Cheviot Hills have played their part in this history, although mostly in darker and more sombre circumstances.

The beautiful hills of Northumberland hide the secrets of our almost
forgotten recent history. The sites of many air crashes are difficult to locate,
even though these aircraft and sometimes their crew met their fate relatively
recently.
Chris Davies has located and visited over 140 crash sites and written a book “
Almost Forgotten – The Search for Aviation Accidents in Northumberland
Chris Davies provides a major piece in the jigsaw of aviation history in Northumberland, recording an important part of Northumberland’s local history that might otherwise have been lost in the mists of time.

It’s hard to believe there are at least half a dozen sites on The Cheviot alone. Probably one of the most famous is the B17 Flying Fortress. During a late afternoon blizzard in December 1944, the U.S. Army Air Force plane crashed killing two members of the nine man crew, but incredibly four were rescued by a local Sheepdog.

Chris Davies has agreed to come along to the Wooler Youth Hostel on the 2nd June at 7:30pm and give a talk on the events leading up to these tragic accidents and also what happened in the aftermath.

The next Day (Sunday 3rd June) Reiver Guiding (Based at the Hostel) in conjunction with Lone Tree Hill Outdoor experience will be hosting a guided walk (approx. 10 miles) to visit these sites on the Cheviot. We will be starting the walk at the car park at the end of the Harthope Valley meeting at 8am, and after a quick chat and kit check we will head up onto Northumberlands highest hill. We will visit 6 of the sites Chris’s talked covered and also have our lunch surrounded by 360 degrees of Northumberlands finest vistas.

Tickets for the evening Talk at the Hostel in Wooler will be priced at £5 (Free if you stay at the Hostel on the Saturday Evening)

Tickets for the guided walk the next day are £15 per person (£10 for under 16’s)
