About this event
Aya Poetry and Spoken Word Monthly Online Meeting
The Aya Poetry and Spoken Word Group was launched on 27th April 2021. A monthly online 2 hour space for Pan-Afrikanists, it normally meets on the second Tuesday of the month. Member, Brother Reederwan describes it as "… black people at our finest. In the beginning there was just a word. In the end there will just be another word. In between is the poetry of our lives”.Published and experienced writers share their experience with Community and Political Activists with a view to better appreciating Afrikan talent and developing the creative use of language to express ideas and emotions. The aim is to use creativity to communicate better in Campaigns, Protests and Activism. It is also a space to share, to unwind and heal from the stress around us.We chose the Adinkra symbol Aya , the fern, because it denotes endurance and resourcefulness, qualities needed in activism and campaigning. The Aya Poetry and Spoken Word Meeting offers a unique opportunity to communicate in ways that resonate and inspire audiences to action. We ended 2024 in December with the theme "Resilience". In January 2025 our theme was “Hope”, in February 2025, we focused on “Vision”. In March with the 21 Days against Racism, our theme was “Justice”. March was also International Women’s Month celebrating Women and the quest for Justice. In terms of the 21 Days against Racim, we look towards 21st March, the UN Day for the Elimination of Racism and the day we commemorate the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre. April looked at "Peace". In May our theme was "Protest". In June we considered that after Protest comes the "African Renaissance". In July we look at "Independence". In August we explored "Persistence". September gives us an opportunity to look at "Resistance" & "Resilience"
