Title: Back to the Future and Back Again - Reflections on Active Blended Learning

Presenter: Andy Clegg      Venue: Staff Development Room, Floor 2, Mercantile House

With increasing emphasis being placed on innovative delivery models to enhance levels of student engagement in Higher Education in the face of increasingly diminished resources (Godlewska et al 2019), many universities are now fundamentally reviewing their approach to learning and teaching. This has had a profound impact on the HE landscape, with many universities (such as Northampton, Glasgow, Aston and UWE) now revitalising their estate and learning and teaching spaces around a more collaborative approach to learning and teaching. Central to this has been a shift to Active Blended Learning (ABL) characterised by a shift to student-centred activities that support the development of subject knowledge and understanding, independent learning and digital fluency’ (Maunder et al, 2018).

The aim of this workshop is to share thinking and discuss the pedagogy behind Active Blended Learning. The aim of the workshop is to explore staff perceptions of the characteristics and features of a module that reflects the pedagogic principles of ABL, and to identify the critical success factors underpinning its successful design and delivery.

The aims of this session are to:

  • Identify the critical success factors underpinning the Active Blended Learning (ABL) in terms of overall design, delivery and evaluation
  • Discuss the key characteristics and features of a module that reflects the principles of ABL
  • Create a common vision and guiding principles for Active Blended Learning
