Event description
Back to YOUR Future by Dr Michelle Bellingham

About this Event

Michelle Bellingham is a lecturer in Comparative Physiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on understanding how exposure to environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals can alter normal physiological function, particularly focusing on how chemical exposure during development may programme adverse health outcomes in later life. Her widely published research uses a unique animal model of sheep exposed to chemical mixtures via grazing land fertilised with biosolids (sewage sludge) which she established at the University Cochno Farm and Research Centre in 2014. Her group (in collaboration with the University of Michigan and University of Nottingham) has recently received $2M NIH funding (over 5 years) to use this model to study the transgenerational consequences of exposure to chemical mixtures on reproductive and metabolic health. As well as teaching physiology across a number of undergraduate and post-graduate degrees, Michelle also enjoys talking to the public about her research and has been involved in several public engagement events over the years including the Glasgow Science Festival, “Science Lates” at the Glasgow Science Centre, and the Royal Highland Show. Her talk will focus on how events during development can alter health and disease risk in later life. She will also touch on personal perspectives of how her past has shaped her research career
