About this Event

Online course - chicken health advice from a poultry vet, giving you practical demonstrations and enabling you to confidently health check your own birds

Backyard chicken - Chicken health check

Health checking your birds regularly is essential to ensure you can identify signs of ill health. As prey animals, chickens hide the signs of ill health, often until disease is advanced, which can then make treating sick birds a difficult task. Identifying disease early can allow you to provide early treatment, and most importantly preserve the health of your backyard flock. This course is suitable for new or experienced keepers.

This course will offer: Advice, practical demonstration and give you the confidence to perform a basic health check on your own chickens.

The course is approximately 90 -120 minutes and covers the following:

    • Review of flock behaviour - how to identify what's normal
    • Confident and safe handling to get the best out of the health check
    • Identify important chicken anatomy and learn what's normal
    • Practical health check - what to look and feel for*
    • Poo review - how to identify what's normal
    • Knowing when to worm and using the right treatments
    • Using supplements to support health
    • When to call the vet
    • When to call it a day - knowing when to euthanise.

About me: I am a poultry vet based in Bristol. I have 15+ years experience keeping my own chickens and ducks in addition to commercial poultry experience.

    Tickets: One ticket per attendee.

Maximum of 6 attendees. The number of attendees is deliberately small to allow open group discussion and sharing of experiences, should you choose to do so. This is an online course facilitated via Zoom. You will receive your Zoom link after purchase.

What you'll need: A chicken, a webcam, pen and paper for notes and a cuppa! *The course can still be attended if you don't currently have a chicken to use in the demonstrations, as there will be lots of practical advice and opportunities to ask questions .

If you do have a chicken that you would like to use during the demonstration/ practical bit of the course, please ensure they have feed and water available and are kept in a suitable carrier / box for the duration of the course.
