The Big Northumberland Gear Change are thrilled to be supporting Northumberland Libraries' Summer Reading Challenge 2025
Over the summer our Balance Bike libraries will be available around the county for young riders to experience the thrill of two wheels!
These FREE sessions are suitable for children aged 4-6 years, last for 45 minutes and include the loan of a balance bike and helmet.
Riders will learn basic cycle handling skills including:
- Starting/ Stopping
- Swerving and emergency stops
- Being aware of their full surroundings whilst riding
- Shared space etiquette
The Northumberland Libraries team will be out and about on The Sele too with stories, activities and more information about the Story Garden summer reading challenge.
How to get involved:
Book your session place here on Eventbrite - first book one of the three time slots listed below selecting the relevant time slot ticket. Please book one place for every child who wishes to ride - siblings who don't want to participate in the bike session are welcome to come an take part in the library led activity.

Hexham Session 1 - 10.00-10.45
Hexham Session 2 - 11.00-11.45
Hexham Session 3 - 12.00-12.45
Parents and carers are required to stay present for the duration of the session. Please ensure your child is wearing comfortable cloths for being active, and suitable footwear with either Velcro or lace fastenings (Please avoid slip-ons/ ballet pumps/ Croc style footwear)
Places are FREE but limited by the number of bikes available so if you find you can no longer attend, please cancel your place so another family can benefit.
