Join AGENCY FOR AGENCY and OCTOBER GALLERY for a day of exploration, discussion and performance in response to Horace Ové film Baldwin's Nigger, 1969.

BALDWINS NIGGER RELOADED II engages directly with many pressing issues we are facing at this time in history and how James Baldwin’s writings and thinking resonate with society today.

BALDWINS NIGGER RELOADED II PERFORMANCE AND WORKSHOP, 2pm

In 1969, photographer and filmmaker Horace Ové released Baldwin's Nigger. This short film documented American intellectual James Baldwin in front of an audience at the Centre for West Indian Students in Kensington.  Join artist Barby Asante and the sorryyoufeeluncomfortable collective for an afternoon workshop exploring the themes of the film in relation to contemporary times.

BALDWINS NIGGER RELOADED II PERFORMANCE, 7pm

Artist Barby Asante and the sorryyoufeeluncomfortable collective will stage a dialogic performance reflecting on the contemporary relevance and significance of Ové's film.

The performance is part of the touring show of Baldwin’s Nigger Reloaded II, it has been performed at Nottingham Contemporary and will travel to Liverpool, Birmingham and Brighton.  The performance is a development from a project created in 2014 with artist Barby Asante and curator Teresa Cisneros at Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) with the sorryyoufeeluncomfortable collective.  The project took the form of an event organised with members of the collective that incorporated an exhibition, display of archival material, discussion workshops, screenings of Baldwin’s Nigger and performances.

Following the performance, please join Barby Asante and sorryyoufeeluncomfortable for a social gathering in October Gallery. A paid bar and refreshments will be available.

Barby Asante, London based Artist, Curator and Educator; Interested in exploring the legacy and material of Black British intellectuals, and positioning their productions as contributions to creativity and culture.  Her interest in history and working with young people contributed to her current work which she has been developing with ex Iniva curator Teresa Cisneros around Horace Ove's 1969 film Baldwin's Nigger with the recently formed sorryyoufeeluncomfortable practice and research collective.
