Join us for a beginners botanical painting workshop with artist Qi Fang Colbert.

In this relaxing painting workshop, you will discover the possibilities of botanic painting using Chinese water-and-ink painting techniques.

The workshop will include a demonstration on how to create botanic subjects such as irises, wisteria, cherry blossom, bamboo and more.

You will learn different brush techniques to make various expressive strokes, marks, shapes and forms to create botanic compositions using ink and water.

Rather than copying the realistic outlines of what you see, the brush can capture the expressive essence with free-flowing brush strokes. Unlike western painting which has an emphasis on shades, volume and botanic precision, the expressive Chinese paintings seek to capture the essence of the plant, illuminated by the contrasting dryness and wetness of the brush strokes, fluency of the flowing brush strokes, and the free-spreading compositions.

This workshop is perfect for absolute beginners and those new to ink painting. No art skills are required to enjoy this spiritual and expressive art form.

Qi Fang Colbert is an artist, ceramist, illustrator, art tutor and independent researcher working between art practice and academic research. Qi studied a practice-led PhD in Fine Art at Newcastle University, UK and a MA and BA of Visual Design at Jiangnan University, China.
