About The Balvenie

After building the Glenfiddich distillery, William Grant started to build The Balvenie distillery back in 1892 with production beginning the year later. The Balvenie is known as one of the most hand-crafted Scotch single malts as they are considered the only distillery in Scotland to grow its own barley, use traditional floor malting, keeping both a copper-smith and a team of coopers on site, and their Malt Master, MBE David Stewart presiding over the maturation stage. Each year, they sow the barley on their thousand-acre farm, aptly named Balvenie Mains and they are one of the remaining distilleries to use traditional floor malting methods.

The Balvenie currently have three whisky ranges consisting of their core products, the D.C.S Compendium and the Balvenie Stories. In order to pass on the malt masters’ knowledge and experience of the process, Balvenie launched a D.C.S Compendium which is essentially his knowledge and expertise rolled into written and liquid form for the next generation. In celebration of the stories passed through each generation of craftsmen, they launched an interesting range concept, Balvenie Stories. These stories are how Balvenie craftsmen know what they do about their production process and how they create new ideas. They have created a range of stories of how the particular whisky had been created, for example their Week of Peat and the Day of Dark Barley.
