Event description

Description

Banbury Symphony Orchestra performs ‘Sounds of Autumn’!

On Saturday 23 November, we will play three major romantic works from the 19th century.

  • Weber: Overture “Der Freischütz“
  • Grieg: Piano Concerto in A Minor
  • Bruckner: Symphony No 6

Carl Maria von Weber is considered the father of German romantic opera. His opera ‘DerFreischütz‘ (‘The Marksman‘) was premiered in 1821, and has been described as the most expressive rendering of the gruesome in a musical score.

Edvard Grieg’s sole concerto, the Piano Concerto in A minor, is rightly one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertoire. The concerto has some stylistic similarities to the piano concerto in the same key by Robert Schumann, but generates an authentic Norwegian flavour and great tunefulness throughout. Our soloist will be the wonderful Madalina Rusu, returning to play once again with the BSO. Her performance of the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 with the orchestra in November 2017 was a complete sell-out!

After the interval, we will perform Anton Bruckner’s powerful Sixth Symphony. In common with much of Bruckner’s symphonic output, the Sixth Symphony was little understood at its first performance in the early 1880s. However Bruckner himself considered it his “boldest symphony” and critics have commented on its “plethora of tender, memorable themes”.
