Event description
BSO's summer concert featuring Rodrigo's guitar concerto played by Craig Ogden, followed by Dvorak's 'New World' Symphony.

About this event

The Banbury Symphony Orchestra has a very special Summer Nights concert lined up for 9 July in St Mary’s Church Banbury, as part of the Church’s ‘Festival 200’ celebrations.

  • Delius: Summer Evening
  • Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez (soloist Craig Ogden)
  • Dvorak: 9th Symphony (‘From The New World’)

We start our programme with the quiet and reflective Summer Evening, an evocative and rarely heard orchestral piece by Frederick Delius, written in the 1890s.

After our starter, and as top of the bill, the orchestra will play the Concierto de Aranjuez, the tuneful and popular masterpiece for guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo. To play the Rodrigo with us will be the internationally-renowned Australian guitarist Craig Ogden, who lives locally in Oxfordshire. Craig has been described as ‘A worthy successor to Julian Bream’ by BBC Music Magazine, and in 2004 he was the youngest ever instrumentalist to receive a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. This special performance is not to be missed!

After the interval we turn to the stirring Symphony No 9 (‘From The New World’) by Antonin Dvořák. This symphony is a marvellously inventive and tuneful composition, written while the composer was in America. Many of the themes reflect the idioms of the native American folk songs which Dvorak heard while in the USA. The slow movement of the symphony contains one of the most memorable tunes in all classical music, using the mellow sound of a solo Cor Anglais, accompanied by muted strings. The exciting climax at the end of the symphony brings back themes from early movements and all ends in a blaze of happiness.
