Ideally we would like you to do the 12 week programme but you can also come for just taster sessions.

Bandaide is a new initiative, based on latest research, to help patients to cope with back and neck pain. This involves exercise and information dissemination in group sessions. The aim is to decrease fear and increase activity.

There are 12 contact sessions. Each contact session involves a Group discussion for 20 minutes followed by a 40 minute exercise class. The exercises are gentle and catered to various abilities. The topics of discussion for each session are as follows
1 Framework of the spine
2 Flaws in the spine
3 Fear of movement
4 Fit to fight / fit to lift
5 Fighting the pain barrier / Credit limit
6 Faulty posture
7 Failure to protect
8 Fat infiltration + Investigations
9 Food and diet
10 Fair medication + Injections
11 Fusion and other surgery
12 Functional assessment + Fun way to help with back and neck pain

Why 12 sessions?
12 is an interesting number. Traditionally it is considered to depict completion or perfection. The clock face has 12 numbers, the annual calendar has 12 months, Jesus had 12 disciples, Alchoholic anonymous has a 12 step programme and the European flag has 12 stars.

Back pain is not a disease (Reference 1). It is a symptom. It is not considered a disease, because most cases of low back pain are non-specific, where there is no clear structural or anatomical cause that can be identified. There is also no medicine, injection, device or operation that can cure back pain. Lifestyle modification and regular core stability exercises can mostly keep it under control.

The prevalence and the cost of back pain are on the increase. Over a 14-year period it rose from 3.9% in 1992 to 10.2% in 2006 (Reference 2).

There are many factors that cause low back pain. Understanding these various factors and bringing about many life style changes cannot be achieved in a short time. Hence the need for the 12 sessions.

Control of back pain is similar to maintenance of dental health. Good dental health requires life style modification by decreasing sugary intake and regular cleaning of teeth. Just because the dentist has completed some dental work, it does not mean that further regular teeth brushing can be abandoned. Similarly following these 12 contact sessions, lifestyle changes need to be put to practice and the core stability exercises need to be done regularly, at least twice daily?

In exceptional circumstances and where there is one to one interaction, the contact sessions can be condensed to 6 sessions.

Outcome and results will be routinely monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme.
