Event description

Description

This event will be presented by David Whiting, and cover Mental Health in the Workplace:

A recent study concluded that underneath the stigma that surrounds mental health and prevents open discussion on the subject, the UK faces a significant mental health challenge at work.

While there are more people at work with mental health conditions than ever before, 300,000 people with a long term mental health problem lose their jobs each year and at a much higher rate than those with physical health conditions. The analysis shows that around 15% of people at work have symptoms of an existing mental health condition.

The study set out what is described as “mental health core standards” – a framework for a set of actions which it is believed that all organisations can implement quickly.

These mental health core standards are as follows:

  • Produce, implement and communicate a mental health at work plan; • Develop mental health awareness among employees; • Encourage open conversations about mental health and the support available when employees are struggling; • Provide employees with good working conditions and ensure they have a healthy work life balance and opportunities for development; • Promote effective people management through line managers and supervisors; • Routinely monitor employee mental health and wellbeing.

(Thriving at Work: The Independent Review of Mental Health and Employers) (2017)

Equally, there are legal obligations around mental health within the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 -

  • ‘Duty of Care’ to protect health, safety and welfare of employees.
  • Assess Risks from hazards at work including work related mental health issues

And, The Equality Act 2010 -

  • Protects disable people from unfair treatment this includes many people with mental health issue
