Take Five Bao Bun Workshop is located in the heart of Edinburgh city centre, just a few steps from the Futures Institute of the University of Edinburgh and close to The Meadows. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the art of making bao buns from Chef May Ling, who brings over 14 years of experience running an Asian restaurant.

The workshop welcomes guests aged 6 to 80 in a fun, relaxed environment. You'll learn every step of the process—from dough preparation and shaping to wrapping and steaming the buns.

Chef May Ling was invited to appear on ITV1 as part of MasterChef judge John Torode’s TV documentary series, and she has had the honour of cooking for His Majesty the King of Malaysia and the Royal Family at her restaurant. With her rich culinary background, she is passionate about sharing her bao bun-making expertise through this unique workshop in Edinburgh.

At the end of the session, you'll take home a detailed recipe and some key ingredients so you can recreate the magic in your own kitchen.Vegan and halal options are available, and the workshop is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all. Chef May Ling is fluent in English, Malay, Cantonese, and Mandarin, allowing her to share not only the techniques of bao bun making but also insights into Asian food culture.

Do you have vegetarian friendly options?

We do have vegetarian options. During the event, we will use red bean paste as the bao filling which is vegetarian friendly. For the steamed bao you take home, please notify us when you book your ticket so we can make the necessary arrangements.
