Join Lucy McGeown for our Drawing Sculpture class series, in which we look at the inimitable British artist Barbara Hepworth!
The DRAWING SCULPTURE SERIES of classes will be looking into the vital relationship between the drawing practices and making processes of some of the pre-eminent female sculptors and installation artists of the 20th and 21st century. Through the lens of drawing, and sometimes printmaking and photography, these artists were able to discover something new about how to visualise their ideas and expand their perception of space, volume and form.
Barbara Hepworth (10 January 1903 – 20 May 1975) was an English artist and sculptor best known for her Modernist sculptures and deeply philosophic sensibility towards creating art. She was a pioneer in her field, firstly by championing the method of direct carving in the 1920’s (alongside Henry Moore) and secondly, by pioneering the piercing of the block of stone in the 1930’s.
Although the Second World War stalled her practice temporarily, it led her to move to St Ives in Cornwall, where she found a deep connection and belonging to the landscape, spending the rest of her life living and working there. St Ives became a refuge during the wartime period and there was a rich community of artists based there, of which Hepworth was a leading figure.
It was during this time that she developed many connections to the European Avant Garde, and as her work developed, her use of photography and drawing to experiment with the possibility of forms flourished too.
Hepworth continued to produce drawings and prints throughout her career and in this class we will be taking a deep look at how the two practices are intertwined at critical points throughout her lifetime.
