Information about Barefoot Computing:

The purpose of the Barefoot Computing project is to help primary school teachers ready themselves for the new computing curriculum. The project is funded by the DfE and will develop computer science exemplification resources for primary schoolteachers. These exemplifications will illustrate how progression can be enhanced across other subjects in the curriculum (such as literacy, maths and science for example) by teaching computer science. They will also equip teachers with the basic computer science subject knowledge and confidence needed to begin the journey towards becoming excellent computing teachers.

Primary schools will be introduced to the new resources through a country wide series of 800 Barefoot Computing workshops run by volunteer experts, which will be run over twelve months starting in the summer of 2014.

The project will also establish new Barefoot Computing practitioner communities for teachers within and supported by the CAS Network of Teaching Excellence in Computer Science. These will be local grassroots communities where teachers can share ideas on what works in the classroom, engage with the wider computing community and develop and spread good teaching practice.

Computing At School  (CAS) aims to promote the teaching of Computing at school. CAS was born out of our excitement with our discipline, combined with a serious concern that many students are being “turned off” computing by a combination of factors that have conspired to make the subject seem dull and pedestrian. Our goal is to put the excitement back into Computing at school.

The Computing At School  group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy, creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. Membership is open to everyone, and is very broad, including teachers, parents, governors, exam boards, industry, professional societies, and universities. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc.  FE, and not for any particular interest group.

UPDATE: September 2015

Nottingham Trent University has been awarded the role of the Network of Excellence (NoE) and Computing At School (CAS) Regional Centre of Excellence (CRCs) Status.  NTU is to ensure:

- the subject of computing becomes firmly established in all primary and secondary schools across the country;

- teachers of computing, at both primary and secondary level are confident, enthusiastic, possess the subject knowledge and skills to be effective and become active participants in local communities of practice.

And we are committed to ensuring these standards are upheld in all our events that we will host and provide for the benefit of all relevant colleagues and trainees in a wide variety of Educational institutions and applications.
