Event Details

This two-day summer meeting represents the highlight of the Barema year - and registration is FREE for all Barema members.

This year's meeting includes:

  • chance to participate in simulated pain and sleep research at the brain imaging research centre CRICBristol 
  • session on credentialing, with Reptrax, Who Are You Ltd and MIA
  • the latest on unannounced audits
  • chance to discuss procurement with a Procurement Director
  • MHRA's new Clinical Director of Devices - and anaesthetist - Dr Neil McGuire
  • Barema members' forum
  • evening conference dinner
  • all at the resplendent Bristol Marriott Royal hotel

And, of course, the chance to catch up with Barema friends and colleagues.

Day one - Venue: Bristol Marriot Royal Hotel
Day symposium of presentations and discussions in the Lancaster Room (1st floor) 
Conference dinner in the Lancaster Room
Overnight accommodation including full buffet breakfast (just £70 for Barema members) 

Day two - Venue: CRIC Bristol
Visit to the brain imaging research centre CRIC Bristol at the University of Bristol, with the chance to take part in simulated pain and sleep research.

Programme - Day Two (Wednesday 25th June)

Delegates will have the chance to participate in a bespoke tour and simulation sessions at the brain imaging centre CRICBristol at the Univeristy of Bristol.

CRICBristol is equipped with the latest Siemens 3T MRI scanner to carry out studies in both healthy volunteers and clinical populations, and babies and children as well as adults.  It also has a purpose-built sleep and physiological monitoring facility fitted with full polysomnographic recording equipment together, infrared video, sound recording and monitoring facilities.

Two areas of current research are pain and sleepDelegates will hear the latest developments in research being done at the centre, take part in simulations demonstrating how such studies are performed, and speak to researchers about their work.

 As well as the tour, demos and simulations of carrying out pain and sleep research studies, there will be short talks by: 

  • Professor Iain Gilchrist, CRICBristol Co-Director
  • Dr Ela Chakkarapani - Xenon treatment
  • Dr Jon Brooks - Studying pain
  • Ms Lee Harrison - Studying sleep

LUNCH will be held at CRIC Bristol.


Transport will be provided for those wishing to return to the hotel.

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will be held at 19:00 (meet in Kings bar) for 19:30 (dinner) in the Lancaster Room of the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel.

Dinner is free for all Barema members and invited guests. Non-members will be asked to pay £32 + booking fee towards the cost of their meal. 

Dress code = smart casual.

Day one of the meeting will be held in the Royal Foyer and Lancaster Room on the first floor of the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel.  This luxury hotel is situated in College Green in central Bristol, right next to Bristol Cathedral, the historic waterfront and other iconic landmarks of the city such as Wills Memorial Building and artworks by Banksy.  See map.

On day two delegates will be visiting CRICBristol on St Michael's Hill.  This is 15 minute walk away, and there will also be transport arranged to and from the hotel.   See map.

The conference hotel is the four-star Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel in central Bristol, featuring a host of amenities including on-site car parking (reduced rates for delegates), restaurant and lounges, and access to the spa and Roman-style leisure club - enjoy a swim, sauna, or workout during your stay. 

The cost for one night's accommodation (24-25th June) including full buffet breakfast will be:

  • Barema members : £70 + booking fee
  • Non-members : £139 + booking fee

Additional nights: If you wish to stay for more than one night (i.e. the 23rd and/or 25th) at the Bristol Marriott Royal, please:
(1) select an 'including accommodation' ticket option and complete online registration 
(2) then email to arrange additional nights. 
Please be aware that each additional night will be charged at the non-subsidised rate of £139.

Directions and Parking

Please see map map and directions at hotel website.  

There is an on-site, underground carpark at the hotel.  Delegates will be entitled to a lower daily parking rates.

There is no parking available at the brain imaging centre CRIC Bristol.  It is, however, within easy walking distance (see map with walking route) and transport will be laid on for delegates to take them to and from the hotel.
