Barking and Dagenham Community Resilience Introductory Workshop
Event Information
About this Event
Do you want to help your community become more resilient and be better prepared for emergencies?
Communities are usually the first to arrive at an emergency and stay behind to help after it has passed. As this is often their first experience of an emergency, community support can lack coordination and people can feel unprepared and overwhelmed.
Resilient communities are better prepared to respond to an emergency (fires, floods, power outages etc.) and recover without long lasting negative impacts. Some of the core elements of community resilience include: engagement, awareness, cooperation, local knowledge, community networks, communication, health, resources.
This introductory workshop will bring together voluntary, community and faith sector organisations, local residents and community groups to discuss community resilience and emergency response in Barking and Dagenham, as part of the British Red Cross’s Community Resilience Programme.
It is an opportunity to meet other groups in the area, share your strengths, learnings and any areas you need to support. Groups will also discuss a vision for a resilient Barking and Dagenham, and help to shape the Community Resilience Programme moving forwards.
Additional Opportunity: We will also be recruiting volunteers for the programme. We are looking for people who would like to take a leadership role in engaging their local community to better prepare, response and recover from emergencies. Though not required, candidates should have some relationship with, or knowledge of, local groups, faith-based groups/organisations etc.
- As a volunteer you’ll receive full training and an induction to help you excel in this role.
- You’ll gain and enhance transferable workplace skills that’ll last you a lifetime.
- Being a volunteer for the British Red Cross means that you can proudly say you are part of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation and know that you are making a difference to people’s lives.
