Baroque Legacy by Elim van Delft (soprano) & La Chapelle Sauvage orchestra

As Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary, this exceptional concert offers a powerful reflection on legacy, voice, and the passage of time — told through the music of Henry Purcell and Antonio Vivaldi, two composers who shaped the Baroque era.

Structured in two atmospheric chapters, the performance traces an emotional and historical journey — from the personal story of Mary II Stuart, Queen of England and daughter of William of Orange, to the rise of the Netherlands as a global cultural power. Through original voice-over narration in the voice of Her Majesty (narrated by famous Dutch actress and singer Karin Bloemen), period instruments, and a stunning multicoloured vocal performance by Elim van Delft, supported by the Belgian orchestra La Chapelle Sauvage under the direction of Karel de Wilde, the past is brought vividly into the present.

A Historical Narrative in Two Acts

Part I – Mary II Stuart & Purcell

Told through the imagined voice of Mary II (narrated by Dutch actress and singer Karin Bloemen), this opening chapter reflects on love, power, loss and legacy. Framed by the elegant and emotional music of Henry Purcell, the segment includes arias, instrumental interludes and a poignant excerpt from Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary.

Part II – Vivaldi & the Dutch Golden Age

The second half moves from courtly sorrow to civic triumph. Bass-baritone Elim van Delft gives voice to three striking arias from Vivaldi’s operas, followed by a dazzling performance of the rarely heard Concerto Grosso RV 562a — a grand orchestral work Vivaldi is said to have dedicated to the city of Amsterdam. The narration evokes the height of Dutch maritime power and cultural influence, forming a dynamic finale.

This production by Red Events & Distribution Ltd. is part of the 2025 Amsterdam 750th Anniversary celebrations, and stands out for its bold storytelling format — combining historical voice, live music, and theatrical structure. This is not just a concert, but a staged reflection on the influence of the Netherlands, seen through music that shaped the 17th and 18th centuries.

PERFORMERS

Elim van Delft is a Dutch opera singer with an extraordinary voice. He received early international recognition, including a diploma from the Elena Obraztsova International Singing Competition in Saint Petersburg. His vocal artistry led him to stages across Europe, most recently earning him the Maria Callas Award (Opera – Youth) at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. Elim captivates audiences with a rare combination of technical brilliance, operatic depth, and emotional clarity.

La Chapelle Sauvage is an artistic house with many rooms. It saw light by the impulse of the Belgian conductor Karel De Wilde as a teamwise and international initiative of young professional musicians coming from all over the world. What gathered them is a wild and untameable musical ambition with a contemporary, critical and reflective attitude.

Karel De Wilde is a versatile artist. He studied piano, organ, harpsichord and double bass at a young age, and then organ, music theory and orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatories of Ghent and Mons. His compositions were successfully created internationally and he performed in the presence of many prominent European personalities. It was Karel's arrangement of the Belgian National Anthem that was selected and performed in Brussels by the National Orchestra of Croatia in the presence of the European heads of government on the day of their accession to the EU. Karel is regarded as one of Belgium's most promising new conductors and is a welcome artistic partner of numerous artists and cultural organisations. This is evidenced by the successful collaborations with La Chapelle Sauvage, Red Events, An Pierlé, Podium Nieuw Talent, Davidsfonds, Beauraing Festival of Sacred Music, Festival van Vlaanderen, German Quality Entertainment, Rusanda Panfili and many others.

In addition to a large classical repertoire, La Chapelle Sauvage gladly ventures into various projects in multiple styles. Not with standing the solid core, their instrumentation continually modifies according to the repertoire which contains a wide variety of chamber music as well as works for symphony orchestra and regularly collaborates with choirs and international soloists. Ever in search for a creative and responsible performance, hereby using the knowledge and techniques which are known to us today.

Ter gelegenheid van de viering van 750 jaar Amsterdam presenteert dit bijzondere concert een krachtige muzikale reflectie op erfgoed, stem en de stroom van de tijd — verteld via de muziek van Henry Purcell en Antonio Vivaldi, twee componisten die de barokperiode diepgaand hebben vormgegeven.

Deel I – Mary II Stuart & Purcell

Aan de hand van de verbeelde stem van Mary II Stuart (ingesproken door Karin Bloemen) ontvouwt zich een hoofdstuk over liefde, macht, verlies en nalatenschap. Geplaatst binnen de elegante en ontroerende muziek van Henry Purcell, bevat dit deel aria’s, instrumentale intermezzo’s en een aangrijpend fragment uit Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary.

Deel II – Vivaldi & de Gouden Eeuw

Van hoflijke melancholie naar stedelijke grootsheid: in dit deel vertolkt Elim van Delft drie indringende aria’s uit Vivaldi’s opera’s, gevolgd door een zeldzame uitvoering van het monumentale Concerto Grosso RV 562a, een werk dat Vivaldi naar verluidt opdroeg aan de stad Amsterdam. De vertelling schetst het hoogtepunt van Nederlands maritiem en cultureel leiderschap — een krachtig en feestelijk slotakkoord.

Elim van Delft is een Nederlandse operazanger met een uitzonderlijke stem. La Chapelle Sauvage is een artistieke broedplaats met vele kamers. Het werd opgericht op initiatief van de Belgische dirigent Karel De Wilde als een internationaal collectief van jonge professionele musici met een ontembare artistieke ambitie en een kritische, eigentijdse blik.

Karel De Wilde is een veelzijdige kunstenaar. Hij studeerde piano, orgel, klavecimbel, contrabas, muziektheorie en orkestdirectie aan de Koninklijke Conservatoria van Gent en Bergen. Zijn composities werden internationaal uitgevoerd en hij trad op in aanwezigheid van vooraanstaande Europese persoonlijkheden. Zijn bewerking van het Belgische volkslied werd uitgevoerd in Brussel door het Nationaal Orkest van Kroatië op de dag van toetreding tot de EU, in aanwezigheid van Europese regeringsleiders. Karel wordt beschouwd als een van de meest veelbelovende dirigenten van België en is een veelgevraagde partner van artiesten en culturele organisaties.

La Chapelle Sauvage beweegt zich moeiteloos tussen stijlen en repertoire. Afhankelijk van het programma varieert de bezetting, van kamermuziek tot symfonisch werk. Regelmatig werkt het ensemble samen met koren en internationale solisten, altijd met een focus op artistieke integriteit, creativiteit en een hedendaagse interpretatiepraktijk.
