Description

Teachers and Educational Professionals from European backgrounds often experience difficulties in applying estern European models of teaching, support and supervision to students from a non-European background.

This Bartlett Learning Lunch will provide staff with a foundation of knowledge and techniques to help teach and support international students.

Elements covered will include:

· Examples of non-UK educational background, and the impact of this on student expectations – particularly on feedback.

· Unpicking staff expectations of students, such as autonomy, critical thinking and coherence

· How to manage confusion and bridge the gap between staff and students expectations

· How to manage expectations of assessment and feedback: clarifying instructions and sharing marking criteria. The language of feedback

· Techniques to help support the learning of international students such as buddy systems and essay writing techniques.

The session will be run by Dr Caroline Selai (Co-Director of UCL’s Cultural Coordination Service and Dr Ariane Smart (Teaching Fellow and International Academic Coordinator at UCL Centre for Languages and International Education).

The lunch is open to all Bartlett academic and professional services staff. Registration is compulsory. Lunch will be provided. Please contact rebecca.payne@ucl.ac.uk if you have any particular dietary requirements.
