Event description

Description

The Basic Archive Skills Training Day has been delivered by Margaret Crockett and Janet Foster for over 15 years. During this time they have revised and developed the one day course to ensure it remains relevant and is responding to the development needs of the museum, library and archives workforce. The course is consistently fully booked and many organisations routinely send new employees as part of their induction and training.

The course combines presentations, facilitated discussion and workshops to ensure an interesting and relaxed learning environment. The Basic Archive Skills Training Day is aimed at people working with archives and records without formal recordkeeping qualifications, and who feel that they would benefit from some basic training in the principles of managing records and archives. It is suitable for:

  • Archives and records assistants

  • Managers of archive staff

  • Librarians and information managers responsible for archives and records

  • IT professionals seeking an overview of the aims of archives and records management

  • Anyone else who has responsibility for managing archives and records

The day consists of four core sessions focusing on the main areas of preservation, collecting, appraisal and description differing in length as appropriate. Sessions will include ample time for questions and a high level of participation is encouraged.

A course handbook will be provided, which will contain:

  • supporting notes for the sessions;

  • a select bibliography;

  • the BASTD glossary of archive and records management terms;

  • useful contacts;

  • info-bytes on related topics;

  • participants list;

  • information about other TASC training opportunities

Participants are encouraged to prepare for the course by formulating questions or issues that have arisen in the course of their work, for consideration by the speakers and the class as a whole.

The course fee includes lunch (with vegetarian option; please let the directors know if you have any other special dietary needs) and tea and coffee.
