Please note that this free training course is exclusively available to community groups based in West Yorkshire. This includes tenants' and residents' associations, registered charities and social enterprises.


What will you learn?

Participants will learn how to establish a straightforward bookkeeping system to efficiently record receipts and payments using an excel spreadsheet, and generate simple useful reports for monitoring and reporting purposes.

The course covers the essentials of what book keeping is and why we do it and good practise in terms of monitoring bank and cash activities.

It will explain the difference between restricted and unrestricted funds, and the requirements to account for different funds.


Additionally, participants will gain hands-on experience with:


  • Entering transactions for up to five different types of accounts, including current and savings accounts and petty cash
  • Conducting bank reconciliations
  • Handy hints and tips when it comes to using Microsoft Excel


What are the learning outcomes of the Cashbook Training?

By the end of the training, participants will:


  • Be equipped to set up and manage a basic cashbook system
  • Understand how to categorise and report on restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Perform accurate bank reconciliations
  • Manage transactions across multiple accounts in a cohesive manner
  • Gain practical bookkeeping skills relevant to community-based organisations


Who should attend the 3-hour Cashbook Training sessions?

This free, online training session is designed for community groups, particularly finance workers or volunteers responsible for day-to-day bookkeeping tasks. It is suitable for:


  • Charities/CIOs
  • Social enterprises/CICs
  • Tenants’ and residents’ associations


The course is highly interactive, usually with 4 (but up to a max of 6) participants to ensure personalised attention. Sessions will be conducted via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and therefore participants will need a computer laptop with Excel software, a microphone and camera. A link to the session along with course materials will be provided a few days before the event.
