This Masterclass will help managers to understand the business planning cycle, processes used to develop plans and the manager’s role in it.

It describes activities in all parts of a business from Marketing, to Finance and Operations and demonstrates how plans come together.

Methods for calculating future resources will be discussed and delegates will be able to apply the techniques in their own areas. Time will be allowed for practice exercises and group discussion.

It will also cover techniques for performance monitoring and show how managers use them to make decisions. The difference between the measurement of input and outputs will be explained.

Delegates will be asked to bring non-sensitive examples of performance monitors from their own organisations and will be encouraged to discuss these.

Who is the masterclass for?

This Masterclass is for all growing SMEs within the Sheffield City Region, as long as the below eligibility criteria is met.

It is primarily for those who have taken on a management role for the first time or those who aspire to do so. It will be equally useful for managers who have been in their role for some time and would like to refresh their skills and knowledge.

Who is leading it?

This Masterclass will be delivered by Richard Coombes from Ltd. Richard worked as a Production Director, a Sales and Marketing Director and as Chief Executive of manufacturing businesses before coming to training and consultancy.

His wide-ranging, multi-functional experience enables him to work successfully in all areas of an organisation and across all business sectors.

He founded and developed Ltd from scratch, building an organisation with experienced staff and establishing a brand name with a good reputation for over delivery, problem solving, cost reduction and profitability improvement.

His primary expertise is in leading organisations or programmes requiring major transformation, change or turnaround and with his consulting clients, he has successfully utilised these skills in Situation Analysis, organisational change, programme management, performance management, process and product costing and the introduction of Lean Systems through Business Process Redesign.

He has delivered training courses in Activity Based Costing and Zero-Based Budgeting for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and many in-house courses aimed at improving the Commercial skills of organisations.


One registration per business is permitted. Businesses that register more than one attendee will be contacted and asked to nominate one person to attend.

We are pleased to be able to provide this masterclass free of charge due to funding from the European Regional Development Fund. There are a number of eligibility criteria for attendees which we will check using the online registration questions and in a phone call to every attendee prior to the event.


Q/ Is there anything I need to prepare in advance or bring with me on the day?

A/ During the Masterclass we will discuss planning and performance monitoring methods. It would be helpful if you could bring non-sensitive information regarding the way these things are carried out in your own business.

This information will be used to enable the attendees to explore different approaches and to evaluate the success of the methods used, leading to a development or improvement plan for you to take back to your own business.

A/ The venue is within the Barnsley local authority area. There are two car parks in close proximity and the venue is a short walk from Barnsley train stration.
