Basic First Aid for Wild Hedgehogs - Hedgehogs waking from hibernation
Overview
Basic First Aid for Wild Hedgehogs
You will learn what to do if you find a sick or injured wild hedgehog and how to care for it whilst you find a rescue space. This course is intended to give you some basic practical tips to help give the hedgehog the best chance of survival whilst you find specialist help from a hedgehog rescue or vet. I will also give you advice for how to look after the hedgehogs in your garden.
We will cover:
- The first rules of rescue
- What equipment you need or how to improvise
- The importance of hygiene and safety - for you and the hedgehog
- What to look for at the rescue scene
- How to find a rescue space
- Limiting stress on the hedgehog whilst you find a rescue
- Rescue or vet - what to consider
- Basic first aid and checks including what to do and what NOT to do
- Seasonal considerations
- How to look after hedgehogs in your garden - what to feed
- What to look for in a hedgehog nest box and feeding station
- What to do about green poo
- The benefits of night cameras for finding issues
- Signposting to further learning
This course will be a presentation covering all the key areas with a 'show and tell' of the equipment and tips discussed.
We will focus on helping hedgehogs emerging from hibernation with a brief look ahead to helping hedgehogs at other times of year. I will run courses later on in 2026 focused on the specifics of helping hedgehogs in Summer and Autumn/Winter.
There will be plenty of time after the presentation to ask specific questions via the online chat.
The funds raised from this course will support my rewilding project in the Yorkshire Wolds and creating habitats for hedgehog and other wildlife.
