Basic Guidance Interview Skills
A comprehensive two-day course that will equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge to carry out career guidance interventions with a range of clients. By the end of the course you will feel confident in using a range of skills and techniques to diagnose clients’ needs, and find ways to guide them in their next steps.
This course is for: careers advisers, employer engagement and placement staff and anyone else involved in one-to-one careers and employability-related interventions with clients.
This is a two-day course. The first day focusses on the skills you will need to use to conduct an effective guidance interactions, as well as giving you a framework to set these skills in. The aims of the day are to
distinguish between guidance, advice-giving, counselling and information-giving
manage client interactions using a framework
use a range of skills and techniques to diagnose clients’ needs
identify ways to guide clients to their appropriate next steps
Learning will take place through a mixture of discussion and practical exercises, including role plays. At the end of the day, participants will set their own objectives for the following day.
The second day is more practical in focus. Participants will take part in further role plays to practise the techniques they have learnt, then will carry out a guidance interaction on which they will receive detailed feedback from the trainers and their peers.
