Event description

Description

Basic Income: A futuristic, utopian idea or a real possibility for Scotland’s future?

You may have heard about Basic Income trials around the world but we may get our own experiment here in Scotland in a matter of years. Last year, Scottish Government allocated £250,000 to four local authorities (Glasgow, Edinburgh, North Ayrshire and Fife) to look at the design and feasibility of Basic Income pilots in Scotland.

Want to know more? Come and join our meet-up on Wednesday 27 March for a great conversation about how a Basic Income may affect you and your country. Because we have a good eye on the work being done in Scotland, Citizen's Basic Income Network Scotland will (only for this time, we promise!) be the speakers. Send us a message if there’s something in particular you’d like to hear about at the event.

What to expect

Basic Income is a term that gets bandied around a lot these days, but what is it? A Basic Income is a payment you receive your entire life, from the day you are born. It doesn't come from an employer, in fact there are no conditions and the money is for you to spend as you choose. Basic Income is a guaranteed income for every citizen, that is enough to live on.

A Basic Income would revolutionise the way we think about issues that reach every citizen of Scotland: poverty, our broken welfare system, work, well-being and unpaid work.

Basic Income & ... is a series of events, run on the last Wednesday of every month, by Citizen’s Basic Income Network Scotland, a volunteer run charity working to open up the conversation about Basic Income in Scotland. Each event explores a theme and how it would be affected by a Basic Income.

We host these events so anyone interested in Basic Income can learn, ask questions and have their say in a relaxed environment. No prior knowledge is required, we always start with a brief introduction to Basic Income and welcome questions throughout. We want these events to be shaped by our community so let us know what you want to talk about! We're all volunteers that do this because we believe a Basic Income is right for Scotland and because we enjoy the conversations and want to open them up to as many people as possible.

The Scottish Government is currently exploring how we could introduce a Basic Income experiment in four areas across Scotland; Edinburgh, Glasgow, North Ayrshire and Fife. Now is the time to join the discussion and shape the future of basic income in Scotland.
